When you come across the Wright Memorial bridge you will find yourself on the border line between the town of Kitty Hawk to the south and the town of Southern Shores on your left. Like much of the Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk has been around a long time but only recently became an actual town.
The Town of Kitty Hawk was incorporated on April 13, 1981 by the North Carolina Legislature. The Town of Kitty Hawk operated under the Mayor-Council form of government until October 23, 1984. The staff was very small during those first three years, including only two (2) police personnel and the Town Clerk.
How the name Kitty Hawk originated is pretty straight forward. Like so many area names in America it is a version of the Native American name. The word originally appeared on English settlers' maps as "Chickehawk" or "Chickahawk" in the early 1700's. The name was mispronounced and by the late 1700's, local residents spelled the name as we do today. You can find old land deeds from the 1700's referring to settlements as "Kittyhuk," "Kittyhark," KittyHawk," and "Kitty Hawk."
Once a remote area, Kitty Hawk has grown into a summer resort area and provides some of the best beach recreation on the North Carolina Coast. When Orville Wright stepped ashore in Kitty Hawk Village in the fall of 1900, he was hoping that he and his brother were going to make history as discoverers of flight. The reason they had chosen this remote fishing village on the Outer Banks was partly for privacy from the competition in the race to mechanized flight.
Even though the first flight happened in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk has been memorialized as the location of the first heavier than air flight. The town has 7 public beach accesses with free parking and a number of public sound side accesses. So if you are looking for a vacation home or a permanent home Kitty Hawk is a good choice.
